Important Maintenance Tips for Commercial Fridges

December 15, 2019

If you operate a commercial refrigerator, you know how important it is to keep it in top working order at all times. That’s why Rooter Express has put together these commercial refrigerator preventative maintenance tip—no one wants to have to call a plumber, so performing regular maintenance on your commercial fridge can help you extend the lifespan of your appliance, and maybe never even have to call the pros for help:

  • Keep it clean: Your fridge should be cleaned on a regular basis, inside and out—try doing it weekly or biweekly. Scrub the interior with a soft brush, warm water and soap or vinegar—it will help eliminate bad smells. If your fridge’s exterior is made of stainless steel, use a washcloth, warm water and a mild soap to scrub down the outside.
  • Clean your drain pans and tubes: It’s gross, but your commercial fridge can create a sludgy, slimy buildup in your drain pans and tubes. When they overflow, the smell can permeate your entire kitchen and beyond. Clean your drain pans at least once per month, and get into the habit of checking the tubes for blockage. You could save yourself a lot of time and money on repairs.
  • Keep it dry: If you notice any moisture in or outside of your commercial fridge, wipe it up with a clean, dry cloth at once. When there’s too much moisture in or outside of your fridge, it can cause the mechanisms to seize up and freeze. Check for moisture about once per week, whether you have a standing or walk-in unit.
  • Look at the air filters: If you have grease and dust in your kitchen, your fridge’s air filters will have to work that much harder to compensate. Get rid of buildup with a shop vacuum, and use degreasing products to get rid of slimy film.
  • Watch out for the gaskets: Does your fridge have cracked or broken gaskets? They could be costing you a lot of money in utility bills. Rubber door gaskets should be checked regularly and replaced as needed—check your owner’s manual to find out the exact make and model you’ll need.
  • Clean the condenser coil: Clean this area monthly—first, turn off the power to your unit, then use a brush or vacuum to remove as much dust and dirt as possible. You may need to use a degreaser. If you notice any cracks or leaks, call a repair technician as soon as possible.

By taking proper care of your appliance and keeping these commercial refrigerator preventative maintenance tips in mind, it’ll enjoy a longer lifespan—and you’ll enjoy not having to call your plumber.
